Issued as part of Poland's long-running collector series celebrating national heritage, this coin incorporates actual Baltic amber — a material Poland has traded since antiquity along the routes Roman merchants called the Amber Road, running from the Baltic coast south to the Adriatic. The inclusion of a genuine amber insert made this one of the more technically ambitious Polish issues of its period, requiring a modified planchet and a separate setting process at the Mennica Polska mint.
Baltic amber from the Samland Peninsula remains the world's most commercially significant deposit, and Poland's historical control of its trade was a recurring source of geopolitical friction through the medieval period.
