20 Zlotys Puchacz (Bubo bubo)

Part of NBP's long-running nature series, this issue was released the same year Poland completed its first full year inside the European Union — a period when the bank was actively expanding its collector program as a soft-power exercise in national identity. The Eurasian eagle-owl, nearly extirpated from Poland by the mid-twentieth century through habitat loss and deliberate persecution, had by 2005 recovered to a breeding population of several hundred pairs, largely through reintroduction efforts coordinated after 1989.

The .925 standard used across this series was chosen specifically to meet international collector market expectations rather than domestic circulation requirements — these were never intended to circulate.
