Reverse description A finely detailed naturalistic composition depicts an adult European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) in profile, moving to the left across the central field, its spines rendered with exceptional sculptural precision. Beneath and around the adult animal, four juvenile hedgehogs are shown among foliage, fallen leaves, and plant stems, conveying a sense of family and natural habitat. To the upper left, tall grasses or reeds rise beside the adult animal's snout. The legend JEŻ – Erinaceus europaeus curves along the upper border in a rounded, naturalistic typeface, presenting both the Polish common name and the Latin binomial. The engraver's initials appear discreetly in the lower left field.

Additional information

Part of NBP's long-running nature conservation series, this issue coincides with a period when Polish environmental law was being substantially rewritten ahead of the country's eventual EU accession process. The hedgehog had been a protected species in Poland since 1952, making it an early and uncontroversial choice for the program.

Mintage for the series entries from this period was tightly controlled, with most issues leaving the mint in presentation packaging and seeing essentially no circulation.
