Jasna Góra monastery withstood a Swedish siege in 1655–56 during the catastrophic invasion Poles call "the Deluge," a conflict that reduced the country's population by roughly a third. The successful defense — led by Prior Augustyn Kordecki against a force vastly superior in numbers — became the foundational myth of Polish Catholic resistance, credited at the time to miraculous intervention and still treated as such.
The 2005 issue falls in a long NBP series commemorating pivotal moments in Polish military and ecclesiastical history, released in the same year Poland marked the 350th anniversary of the siege's conclusion.
