Additional information

Issued to commemorate the opening of the Hotel Intercontinental in Kinshasa, this piece belongs to a broader suite of gold commemoratives released by Mobutu Sese Seko's government in the early years of Zaïre — the state he had renamed from the Democratic Republic of the Congo just months prior in October 1971. The renaming was central to his "Authenticité" campaign, a cultural and political program demanding Africanization of names, dress, and institutions.

The Banque du Zaïre itself had only been established that same year, making this among its earliest issued commemoratives.
