The Chinese Panda gold series famously changes its reverse design annually — a deliberate policy adopted from the series' inception in 1982 to drive collector demand and discourage melting. The 2012 issue falls within the period before the People's Bank standardized weights metrically in 2016, when the 1/20 oz specification was officially redenominated to 1.5 grams; this piece still carries its imperial-derived troy fractional identity.
