The Bank of West Shantung (鲁西银行) was a puppet institution established under Japanese occupation in the Jining area of western Shandong province. Notes issued in Year 29 of the Republic calendar — 1940 — circulated in a region under contested military control, where Japanese forces were actively suppressing Communist base areas. The bank's currency was part of a broader Japanese strategy of issuing local puppet bank notes to displace Nationalist fabi and disrupt Communist-backed currency systems simultaneously.
The 20 Yuan denomination is among the less commonly encountered values from this issuer.
