Turkey's 2005 wildlife series was part of a broader push by the Darphane to produce collectible silver issues in the immediate aftermath of the lira redenomination — on January 1st of that year, the Turkish government dropped six zeros from the currency, creating the "Yeni Lira" (New Lira) as a stabilization measure following the catastrophic 2001 financial crisis that had briefly pushed inflation above 68%. These early Yeni Lira collector pieces are consequently among the first silver commemoratives struck under the redenominated system.
The Kangal itself is a working livestock guardian breed originating in Sivas Province, long considered a national symbol and subject to strict export controls by the Turkish government.
