Additional information

Turkey's "yeni" (new) lira redenomination took effect on January 1, 2005, dropping six zeros from the old lira following a decade of inflation that had pushed everyday denominations into the millions. This coin is among the earliest silver issues struck under that new monetary system. The long-eared desert hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus) is native to the arid regions of southeastern Anatolia, and the Darphane's wildlife series from this period drew specifically from fauna found within Turkish borders — a deliberate choice to frame national identity through biodiversity rather than historical iconography.
