Turkey's "New Lira" redenomination took effect on 1 January 2005, dropping six zeroes from the old lira after decades of chronic inflation had reduced the currency to absurdity — a million old lira had become a routine transaction. This coin belongs to the first year of that redenomination, making the "Yeni" (New) designation itself short-lived; it was dropped in 2009 when the plain "Türk Lirası" was restored.
The hazel dormouse (*Muscardinus avellanarius*) was a deliberate choice for a wildlife conservation series aimed at raising awareness of species under pressure in Anatolia. These collector issues saw limited distribution outside of numismatic channels.
