North Korea's commemorative coinage from the mid-2000s was produced almost entirely for foreign collectors and the hard-currency tourist trade — virtually none entered domestic circulation, where the won was subject to a catastrophic redenomination in 2009 that wiped out personal savings and triggered rare public protests against the regime.
