| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of President Hastings Kamuzu Banda occupying the central field, modelled in high relief with fine surface detail to the hair and collar. The effigy, engraved by Paul Vincze, is rendered in a naturalistic portrait style. The country name MALAWI appears in a curved legend along the lower portion of the field, set on a slightly raised ribbon-like banner. |

The KM#11.2a designation reflects a compositional shift from the earlier nickel-brass striking — a cost-driven change that coincided with Malawi's severe foreign exchange shortages of the late 1980s under the one-party state of Hastings Banda. Nickel clad steel was cheaper to source and easier to acquire without hard currency reserves.
