Issued in the early years of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, this series belongs to the first standardized coinage introduced after the communist consolidation of power. The 1952 monetary reform that accompanied it was a brutal currency conversion — citizens were required to exchange old leva at punishing rates, effectively wiping out privately held savings and accelerating the destruction of the prewar merchant class.
