The Battle of Callao on May 2, 1866 saw a Spanish naval squadron attempt to reassert influence over its former colony — the last serious Spanish military action against any South American nation. Peruvian shore batteries repelled the fleet decisively, and the date became a national holiday. This coin was struck for the centennial of that engagement.
KM#249 was part of a broader commemorative program Peru issued through the mid-1960s in .900 silver, largely aimed at collector markets.
