Pope Paul VI visited Uganda in July 1969 — the first papal visit to Africa in history — to attend the consecration of twelve African bishops and open the second plenary assembly of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa. Uganda issued this coin to commemorate that visit directly. The timing of the 1969–1970 date range reflects production running across fiscal years rather than any change in design or specification.
