Obverse description The obverse field is entirely occupied by a multi-line Shi'a religious legend rendered in bold Nasta'liq script, presenting the names of the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shi'ism. The central field is enclosed within a plain inner circle, itself surrounded by an elaborate floral and arabesque scroll border that fills the outer margin. The inscription, deeply struck in high relief against a dark recessed field, reads the shahada followed by the names of Ali, Hasan, Husayn, and the successive Imams through to Muhammad al-Mahdi. The overall design reflects the distinctly Shi'a identity of the Safavid coinage tradition.
