Additional information

Tonga's 1968 decimal coinage was introduced as part of a broader Pacific-region metrication push, converting the country away from its old pound-based system. Taufa'ahau Tupou IV had ascended to the throne in 1965 following the death of his mother, Queen Sālote, whose long reign had kept the old currency intact.

The series ran through 1974 without design modification — unusual longevity for an introductory decimal type in a small Pacific monarchy still finding its administrative footing.
