Samoa's 1967 coinage — of which this piece is part — was the country's first decimal series, introduced as Western Samoa prepared to assert greater economic independence under the long rule of Malietoa Tanumafili II, who had held the position of O le Ao o le Malo since 1963. The series was struck at the Royal Mint in London and released ahead of full decimal adoption, effectively replacing a currency system still tied to New Zealand's pound.
