Brunei's 1984 independence from Britain — after nearly a century as a protected state — was a reluctant one. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah had long resisted full separation, wary of the security guarantees that came with the arrangement. The 1994 commemorative marks the decade since that transition, issued by a monetary board that itself only gained full operational independence alongside the state.
