Obverse description The Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's national emblem, is depicted in high relief at the centre of the field, showing three lions atop an abacus adorned with the Dharma Chakra flanked by a bull and a horse in low relief. The circular legend reads 'भारत' (Bharat) to the left and 'INDIA' to the right in the upper field. The denomination '20' appears in large numerals in the lower centre, with 'रूपये' (Rupaye) inscribed to the left and 'RUPEES' to the right along the lower legend.

Reverse description Two large ears of grain — rendered in fine detail with individual husks clearly defined — arch symmetrically from the base of the field, meeting at the top to frame a central rectangular tablet. Within the tablet, the FAO slogan is inscribed in Devanagari script reading 'अधिक अन्न उगाओ' above a dividing line, with the English translation 'GROW MORE FOOD' below. The date '1973' appears in the exergue at the bottom of the field, with the mint mark 'B' (Mumbai Mint) situated just below the tablet.
