| Additional information |
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka was established in 1950 under the Monetary Law Act, making this 2020 issue a commemoration of its seventieth year of operation. The bank opened just two years after Ceylon's independence from Britain, taking over monetary functions previously held by the Currency Board — a colonial mechanism that had tied the rupee directly to sterling reserves with no domestic policy discretion whatsoever.
KM#226a distinguishes this from the base steel version struck in the same year, the aluminium bronze composition reserved for the commemorative issue.
