Obverse description The obverse is printed in dark green and red on a pale cream ground, with the title legend THE GOVERNMENT OF THE EAST AFRICA PROTECTORATE set within an elaborate guilloche border at the top. The denomination TWENTY RUPEES is stated in large letterpress at centre, flanked by numeral 20 panels on either side, and the value is additionally inscribed in Arabic and Hindi scripts within a central cartouche. The place and date of issue, Mombasa, 1st December 1918, appear below the denomination, with the manuscript signature of the Currency Commissioner and the imprint FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF THE EAST AFRICA PROTECTORATE in a panel at the foot.

Reverse description The reverse is an uninked typographic impression showing a mirror image of the obverse design in pale ghosted tones, with no independently printed elements, consistent with single-sided printing practice employed by Thomas De La Rue for this early East Africa Protectorate issue.
