The Colombo Medical Faculty — formally the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colombo — traces its founding to 1870, when the Colombo Medical School was established under British colonial administration to train local practitioners and reduce dependence on imported medical staff. It is among the oldest medical institutions in South Asia. The 150th anniversary fell in 2020, a year defined globally by a public health emergency that gave the commemoration an unintentional weight no mint planning committee could have anticipated.
