Sri Lanka has conducted population censuses since British colonial administration formalized the practice in 1871, making 2021 the 150th anniversary of that first enumeration. The 2021 census itself, however, was postponed due to COVID-19 — a quiet irony for a coin commemorating demographic record-keeping during the country's most disruptive public health event in a century.
