The Diamond Jubilee commemorated here marks sixty years of Maldivian independence from British protectorate status, which formally ended in 1965 — though the sultanate had been self-governing in most practical respects for decades before that. The Maldives Monetary Authority, established in 1981 to replace the Maldives Monetary Board, has issued a relatively thin series of commemorative silver, making KM#113 one of the few pieces from this issuer likely to appear in general world coin collections.
