The Yanka Kupala National Academic Theatre in Minsk was founded in 1920 and takes its name from the Belarusian poet Iван Дамінікавіч Луцэвіч — known by his pen name Yanka Kupala — who died under circumstances that remain contested. He fell from a stairwell in a Moscow hotel in 1942 while under NKVD surveillance, and Soviet authorities ruled it accidental. The theatre itself survived German occupation during World War II, though its building was severely damaged and its troupe evacuated east.
Belarus has issued commemorative silver in this series consistently for institutional centenaries since the early 2000s.
