Belarus has issued butterfly-themed coins fairly steadily since the mid-2000s, part of a broader series on regional fauna that has attracted collector attention across Eastern Europe. The Purple Emperor — Apatura iris — is a species native to deciduous woodland across temperate Eurasia, though its populations have declined sharply in Western Europe due to habitat loss.
