The Golden Cockerel (Zolotoy Petushok) derives from Pushkin's 1834 verse tale, itself adapted from a Washington Irving story in "The Alhambra" — a fact Pushkin's contemporaries recognized but Soviet-era scholarship was slow to acknowledge. The tale was banned under Nicholas I shortly after publication for its thinly veiled satire of autocratic rule.
Belarus issued several collector pieces through the late 2000s drawing on Russian literary and folkloric sources, partly reflecting shared cultural inheritance and partly driven by the export numismatic market that grew sharply after 2005.
