Transnistria's commemorative coinage program is one of the more unusual in post-Soviet numismatics — a breakaway state recognized by no UN member government issuing legal tender coins that circulate in name only. This 2012 silver piece honors the Transnistrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a diplomatic apparatus conducting state-to-state relations that most of the world officially pretends don't exist. The partial gilding is applied locally within Tiraspol, not at the striking facility, which introduces variability in gilding coverage that collectors of the series have noted across examples.
