Mikałaj Radziwiłł "the Black" was the dominant political figure of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at mid-sixteenth century — Chancellor, then Grand Chancellor, Marshal, and the principal architect behind the 1569 Union of Lublin negotiations, though he died before its signing. A convert to Calvinism, he funded the translation and printing of the Brest Bible in 1563, the first complete Bible printed in Polish, making him a foundational patron of Protestant culture in the region. The Radziwiłł family connection to Belarusian national identity explains their recurring presence in the National Bank's commemorative program throughout the 2010s.
