The II European Games were held in Minsk in June 2019, making Belarus only the second host nation in the event's short history after Azerbaijan staged the inaugural games in Baku in 2015. Belarus lobbied aggressively for the hosting rights as a vehicle for international visibility, with Lukashenko's government treating the logistics as a matter of national prestige — some 4,000 athletes from 50 countries competed across 15 sports.
