Additional information

The Zhyrovichy Monastery, located in the Grodno region of western Belarus, is among the oldest Orthodox monastic communities in the country, with origins traced to a reported apparition of the Virgin in the late 15th century. The icon venerated there became a pilgrimage destination that survived the monastery's forced conversion to Uniate rite under Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth pressure in the 17th century, then its return to Orthodoxy in 1839 following the Polotsk Church Union's dissolution.

Belarus issued a series of icon-themed silver coins in the late 2000s and early 2010s, of which this is one. The selective gold plating is applied at the Minsk Mint using galvanic deposition.
