Issued as part of Belarus's long-running Orthodox sacred sites series, this coin commemorates the Icon of the Mother of God of Minsk, venerated in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Minsk. The icon is traditionally dated to the 14th century and was reportedly found floating on the Svislach River in 1500 — a discovery that prompted the construction of a dedicated church on the riverbank. Partial gold plating on devotional coin issues of this type became a deliberate production choice by the National Bank, echoing the gilded icon covers, known as oklads, used in Eastern Orthodox tradition to adorn sacred images.
