| Additional information |
Belavezhskaya Pushcha — the primeval forest straddling the Belarusian-Polish border — is home to the last wild population of European bison, a species that went extinct in the wild in 1927 and was rebuilt entirely from captive stock over subsequent decades. The reintroduction program began in the 1950s; by 2001 the population had recovered sufficiently to become a source of cautious national pride rather than ongoing crisis.
The forest itself gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979, with the Belarusian section added in 1992 shortly after independence.
