Belarus launched an extensive Olympic-themed silver program ahead of the Athens 2004 Games, issuing dozens of sport-specific pieces through the National Bank. Shot put was among the disciplines featured — a nod to Soviet athletic dominance in field events that Belarus, as a post-Soviet successor state, was keen to associate itself with nationally. The series was struck in 2003 for release ahead of the Games, a common forward-dating practice for commemorative programs of this scale.
