| Obverse description | Central field displays the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons charged with bezants) within a bordure of castles — surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is flanked on each side by three dots arranged vertically, a distinctive feature identifying this Rio de Janeiro Mint type. The circular legend, rendered in Latin, runs along the periphery and is separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. The entire design is enclosed within a milled edge border. |
