Obverse description Central field features the crowned royal cipher of King Pedro II of Portugal, formed by interlaced initials within a shield-like frame, struck in the hammered style typical of late 17th-century Portuguese colonial coinage. The large crown above the cipher is a distinguishing characteristic of this emission, differentiating it from earlier Pedro II issues. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading PETRVS . II . DG . P . REX . E . B . D, proclaiming Pedro II as King of Portugal and Lord of Brazil by Divine Grace. The lettering is set within a beaded or toothed inner border. The overall strike reflects the artisanal quality characteristic of the Bahia Mint production of this period.
