| Reverse description | The numeral 20, rendered in large open characters, is displayed at the center of the field, enclosed within a wreath of olive and laurel branches tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The date appears below the numeral, within the lower portion of the wreath. A small floral rosette ornament is placed at the top of the wreath interior. The surrounding legend PORTUGALIAE ET ALGARBIORUM REX runs along the full periphery of the coin, separated by a floral stop, with a toothed milled border. |

| Additional information |
The Azorean copper coinage of the 1860s existed because the islands operated under a distinct monetary administration from mainland Portugal, a legacy of their geographic isolation that persisted well into the constitutional monarchy. Luiz I had ascended in 1861 following the sudden death of Pedro V from typhoid, and the early years of his reign saw several regional monetary adjustments as the new government rationalized inherited currency arrangements.
The two-year window of 1865–1866 is the entirety of this type's production run.
