Obverse description The obverse displays the punched countermark of the Azores: a crowned 'G.P.' cartouche stamp applied to the host coin, visible in the upper-left field. The countermark is incuse and rectangular with a crown surmounting the initials, characteristic of the 1877 Azorean revalidation issue. The underlying host coin is a Portuguese India 15 Réis piece, whose original design details are largely obscured by heavy wear and the application of the countermark. The copper surface shows a reddish-brown patina with significant surface corrosion consistent with prolonged circulation.
