Reverse description The central field displays a Portuguese armillary sphere — the emblematic navigational instrument associated with Portuguese overseas dominion — rendered in fine relief with clearly delineated meridian and parallel bands forming a grid pattern, traversed diagonally by an ecliptic band. A small royal crown surmounts the sphere at the top. The circular Latin legend PECVNIA·TOTVM·CIRCVMIT·ORBEM runs between the inner beaded border and the milled outer rim, proclaiming that money circulates around the world, an apt motto for a colonial trade coinage.
