| Additional information |
João VI issued this copper coinage in the final years of a reign defined by extraordinary dislocation — he had governed from Rio de Janeiro since 1807, when the royal court fled Lisbon ahead of Napoleonic forces. He only returned to Portugal in 1821 under constitutional pressure, leaving Brazil to his son Pedro, who declared independence the following year. By 1825, the Portuguese crown was formally recognizing Brazilian independence in exchange for financial compensation, and the domestic economy bore the strain.
The Gomes suffix notation on this type indicates a sub-variety within the J6.04 series, details of which remain incompletely catalogued.
