Additional information

João VI issued this copper coinage from Rio de Janeiro after the Portuguese royal court fled Lisbon ahead of Napoleon's 1807 invasion and re-established itself in Brazil — the only instance in history of a European monarch governing an empire from a colonial capital. The Brazilian mint had been formally re-established in 1808 specifically to serve the transplanted court's monetary needs.

KM#316 is known with significant die variation across its four-year run, partly attributable to inconsistent local die-cutting quality.
