Obverse description Central field features the Portuguese royal coat of arms — a crowned shield displaying the five quinas (escutcheons) of Portugal arranged in a cross pattern, enclosed within a broad ornamental border of fine milling. The crowned arms are rendered in a bold, slightly crude colonial style typical of early eighteenth-century Lisbon copper coinage. A continuous circular legend surrounds the shield, reading IOANNES.V·D.G.P.ET·BRASIL·REX, identifying João V as King of Portugal and Brazil by the Grace of God. Small rosette or pellet stops separate the legend elements. The overall design is contained within a beaded or toothed rim.
