Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms, featuring the traditional quartered escutcheon with the five quinas (shields) of Portugal and the red bordure charged with castles, all surmounted by a royal crown. The heraldic shield is framed by ornamental laurel or oak branches on either side. The peripheral legend reads JOANNES. DEI.
