Additional information

Portugal's colonial administration in Angola faced a persistent small-change shortage in the 1890s, and rather than mint new low-denomination coins outright, Lisbon authorized the countermarking of surplus Brazilian 20 Réis pieces — themselves already obsolete following Brazil's 1889 transition to a republic. The host coins had been struck under Pedro II, whose empire had collapsed six years prior, making this a colonial recycling of a deposed monarch's coinage into Portuguese Africa.

The crowned shield countermark applied in 1895 is notoriously shallow on many examples, a consequence of the light silver blanks offering minimal resistance.
