| Obverse description | Large numeral '20' occupies the central field, flanked by decorative foliate scrollwork on either side, with the unit 'RÉIS' inscribed below in bold capital letters. A small ornamental device appears above the numeral. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL' runs along the upper periphery, while the date appears at the bottom of the coin separated by a small lozenge ornament. The overall design is rendered in a bold, high-relief Art Nouveau-influenced style with no exergue line. |

| Additional information |
Brazil's small copper-nickel coinage of this period survived an extraordinary stretch of monetary turbulence, including the inflation pressures of the 1920s and the political upheaval of the 1930 Revolution that brought Getúlio Vargas to power. The series continued minting through all of it, largely because denominations this small were too inconvenient to demonetize quickly. Production ran across multiple years with little design intervention from the Casa da Moeda do Brasil, making date-by-date mintage figures the primary variable of collector interest within the type.
