Issued to mark the centenary of Kubitschek's birth, this piece commemorates the president who arguably staked Brazil's entire fiscal future on a single city. The construction of Brasília between 1956 and 1960 consumed roughly a third of the federal budget and triggered inflation that destabilized the economy for years after he left office — a bill his successors spent decades settling.
