FIFA marked its centennial in 2004, and Brazil — as the only nation to have won the World Cup five times by that point — was a natural partner for commemorative issues. The Casa da Moeda struck this piece the same year Brazil hosted no major tournament, making it a retrospective rather than an event coin.
The .900 fineness places it in the older Brazilian gold standard, not the .999 fine issues that would follow in later commemorative programs.
