Egypt launched the Cairo Metro in 1987 — the first subway system on the African continent and in the Arab world — and this coin was struck two years later to mark the occasion. The commemorative was issued as the initial Line 1 stretching from Helwan to El-Marg was still being completed in stages, meaning the coin preceded full operational status of the line it celebrated.
