Obverse description Printed in black on white cotton paper, the obverse carries the issuer's name 'THE NATIONAL BANK' at the top and 'OF SCOTLAND' at the foot in large serif letterpress. Two oval guilloche medallions bearing the numeral '20' flank a central heraldic vignette in intaglio, showing a crowned shield supported by a lion and unicorn with a Scottish saltire flag, surmounted by allegorical figures. Below the vignette, a cartouche reads 'EDINBURGH' with the promise-to-pay text in copperplate script, and the word 'SPECIMEN' is handwritten across the lower centre.

Reverse description The reverse presents a mirror-image impression of the obverse design, visible as a blind or show-through print on the back of the single-sided note, with all lettering and vignette elements appearing in reverse orientation. The oval guilloche panels, central heraldic vignette, and the 'EDINBURGH' cartouche are all discernible in reverse through the paper. The word 'SPECIMEN' and the stain at lower centre are also visible in reverse.
